Benefits for a team without an HR department

Health insurance, travel coverage, income protection, all in one
If you run an early-stage company with a handful of people, you probably want to offer your team real benefits, but setting up a benefits program is built for a company size you haven’t quite reached. It assumes you have an HR function and a team that mostly lives in one country. You may have none of those, and you probably don't have time to build them.
Nomad Citizen for teams is made for this situation. It's one membership that gives your team members health insurance, life coverage, income protection if they lose their job, parental leave, disability, travel coverage, and more.
You pay one monthly fee and we take care of the rest. It’s simple to set up by one person and works wherever your team happens to be (excepting full-time US residents). There's no benefits program to design, and no HR department required to run it, so your company can focus on the most important priority: growing. It also gives your startup an edge as you compete for the best talent globally.
Here's how it works and what it covers.

What's included

Nomad Citizen bundles into a single membership the things a team would otherwise have to buy from several different providers. We provide a 10% group discount for teams of 5 or more. It includes:
  • Health insurance — worldwide coverage up to US$1.5 million a year, including routine care, hospitalization, maternity, dental, and vision. Any licensed provider, in almost any country
  • Income protection — up to US$4,000 a month if a team member can't work due to illness or loses income due to factors outside of their control (waiting periods apply)
  • Parental leave — up to US$4,000 a month for new parents, up to 6 months for birthing mothers and 4 months for co-parents (waiting period applies)
  • Long-term disability — up to US$4,000 a month until the age of 75 if someone becomes permanently unable to work due to illness or injury
  • Travel coverage — emergency medical evacuation, trip delays, lost luggage, theft, and more
  • Life coverage — financial assistance for a colleague’s family in case of death, plus repatriation
  • Medical history disregarded — we don’t automatically exclude any medical conditions and review each applicant holistically. Once a member is approved, pre-existing conditions aren’t excluded.
It's one plan covering most of what a traditional benefits package would, which is the point: your team gets the protection, and you don't have to assemble it piece by piece.

Why it suits a small team without HR

Three things make it workable for a company that doesn't have a benefits department:
  1. One person (doesn’t really matter who) at your company opens the plan and invites your team. After that, each team member owns their plan, while the company covers the cost.
  2. You cover the cost however it suits you; your team can use their corporate cards or get reimbursed from your company account.
  3. It works across borders and definitions of employment. If your team is spread across countries, or includes contractors, not just full-time employees in one place, Nomad Citizen still works, because it was built for people living and working internationally rather than for a single-country workforce.

How it works

  1. You choose a start date for your team and send each person an invite to apply.
  2. Each team member applies before the deadline. It takes a few minutes and includes a few short health and income questions.
  3. Once a member is approved, their coverage begins on the start date you set for the group.
Some caveats to keep in mind:
  • Minimum team size is 5: To get the 10% group discount, you must have at least 5 people on the plan.
  • Members apply and are individually approved: You offer the plan to your team, and each person joins once approved. Coverage isn't automatic for everyone; a small number may not be eligible based on their health history.
  • There are age and income limits: We can only offer membership to those aged 18-55 (inclusive) and who make at least US$4,000/month at time of enrollment.
  • We are not able to cover full-time US or Puerto Rico residents: We can still cover claims in the US for brief visits or travel there.

What it costs

Nomad Citizen is priced on age alone, not medical history or location. For an individual in their thirties, that's currently US$399 a month with the group discount. Check out our analysis on how it compares to a piecemeal approach.

Is this the right fit?

It's less of a fit if your team is all  in one country with straightforward local options, or if you need a true group plan that guarantees enrollment for everyone.
But if you're a small, distributed, or fast-moving company that wants to give your team real, meaningful protection without spinning up a benefits operation to do it, Nomad Citizen might be for you.
If this sounds like you, the simplest next step is to get a quote for your team.
