If you're an American living internationally, you may still be paying for health insurance designed around a life you no longer live.
A full-price US plan can cost hundreds, or even more than $1,000 a month. And after paying the premium, you may still face a deductible of several thousand dollars before your coverage kicks in.
That can make sense when the US is your home base. But what if you spend most of the year abroad and only return occasionally to visit family and friends?
Nomad Citizen was created for exactly this kind of life: global coverage that travels with you, including coverage during visits to the US.
For the right person, switching from a US-first insurance plan could mean saving thousands of dollars a year while gaining benefits designed specifically for an international lifestyle.
One membership built around your whole life abroad
Nomad Citizen goes beyond traditional health insurance. It combines:
Global health coverage, including eligible care in the US
Dental and vision benefits
Travel coverage
Income protection
Sick and parental leave benefits
Visa assistance
There's no deductible or coinsurance, and you're free to visit any licensed medical provider rather than navigating a restricted network.
Instead of maintaining separate products for health, travel and income protection, or paying for a US policy you rarely use, you can have one membership built around the way you actually live.
And yes, you can still be covered when visiting the US
This is usually the first question Americans abroad ask.
Many international health plans either exclude the US or charge significantly more to include it. That often leaves internationally based Americans feeling like they have no choice but to keep paying for domestic insurance.
Nomad Citizen takes a different approach.
It is not intended to replace full-time US health insurance for someone living primarily in the United States. But if you spend most of your time abroad and return to the US occasionally, your membership can continue covering eligible medical needs during those visits.
There is no separate US rider or waiting period simply because you have returned home. You continue using the same global membership.
That means you don't have to keep an expensive, year-round US plan solely because you're worried about being uncovered during a trip home.
What could the savings look like?
Depending on age, full-price individual premiums can range from around $456 to $840 per month. The average individual deductible is also estimated to be $3,000.
Here's how that compares with Nomad Citizen:
US figures are KFF marketplace averages. Nomad Citizen pricing is for ages 18–39; other age bands are priced differently, and plans are a 12-month commitment.
The opportunity isn't simply to find "cheaper health insurance." It's to stop paying for a domestic plan built around living in one country, and choose broader protection designed around a global life.
For some members, that could mean saving thousands annually while gaining benefits their US health plan never provided.
How using your coverage works
Nomad Citizen doesn't restrict you to a traditional provider network. You can visit any licensed doctor and submit eligible expenses through the SafetyWing app.
For covered medical expenses of up to $500, you can use the SafetyWing prepaid debit card at the point of care. Once you submit the required documents and close the claim, the balance is restored.
For larger expenses, you can pay and request reimbursement. Direct billing is also available for larger claims.
To submit a claim, you'll generally need:
A medical report on official letterhead that includes your symptoms, diagnosis and treatment plan
An itemized invoice and proof of payment
Requesting these documents before leaving the provider makes the claims process much easier, especially if you'll soon be traveling to another country.
Is Nomad Citizen designed for you?
Nomad Citizen may be a strong fit if you:
Are a US citizen living internationally
Return to the US for visits rather than living there full time
Are between 18 and 55 years old
Are actively employed or self-employed
Earn at least US$4,000 per month
Want health coverage and broader financial protection built around a global lifestyle
If that sounds like you, you may finally have an alternative to paying year-round for US insurance you barely use.
